Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Okay. I haven't even wanted to attempt writing a post for quite a few days now. I'm back in Texas and have been extremely busy doing all sorts of things that are non-work related. Yes, I've been goofing off. Maybe I'll talk about that more later (or--as you've seen I'm prone to--maybe not).

I just finished watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, starring Jim Carry and Kate Winslet. This film is about a year and a half old (I wish I'd seen it sooner!). If you haven't seen it, go see it now. Immediately. Why are you still reading this? Go to frickin' Blockbuster and rent the damn thing!

This film was ridiculously enticing, utterly imaginative, and goddamned refreshing cinema with regards to what's playing on that big screen downtown these days. I was completely entranced throughout the entire film. The entire film! There was not one dull moment and I feel as if I must watch it again and again so as to ensure I gather every tidbit of information available. Look people, if you haven't already had the pleasure of seeing this: don't read the back of the box, don't read any reviews, don't think about it for one more minute--just go see the damn thing! It is so totally worth it.

And a penny for my thoughts... If you're in a relationship--a crazy mixed up, twisted chatoic situation that's so seemingly doomed--with someone you're mad about (someone who--no matter how hard you try--you just can't seem to erase from your memory); and you're thinking, "Oh my god! This is going nowhere!" And you're wrought with uncertainty as to where it's all ultimately going? [Is this familiar people?] Don't give it up. Don't let her go, man (I suppose you shouldn't be letting him go either). Grab on to her, or him, so freaking tight and don't ever let go. Remember Good Will Hunting? It's the small infractions that we remember, man; it's those queer little details that we chuckle about years after.

For me, it's her stupid obessession with the color pink. Or those bandanas. Or maybe it's the cute way that she walked with those huge purses that looked so ridiculously heavy and uncomfortable. But it's also that tiny bit of queso on her mouth every single time! It's her nerves as I'm driving too fast, as I hear her short breaths...

I could do this all day, and about all of my exes, I'm sure. But it's too late for me. They've moved on. I've moved on--I think. I'm grown up now. We're no longer alike. We're so far apart. But I'll always have these memories. They can never take that away from me, I assure you.

So go grab that nutcase of a significant other you've got and sit him or her down on a couch and pop this movie in the DVD player. You won't be disappointed; and be sure to bring an umbrella.

First, never go to Blockbuster. Why do you think that company has stopped charging late fees? I wager that it's because the bulk of their business (we call them the *middle class*) has been turned on to the various "direct/tivo/dish" networks which allow you to get movies much sooner than the video stores, and for less money (sadly, the package typically includes fifty channels that show nothing but golf, Kobayashi's latest hot dog eating contest, amatuer Bob Villas making all types of objects out of wood and string, and yes, animal police shows). Still it's better than blockbuster--really Kobayashi alone is better than most new movies when you think about it.
Secondly, what the hell was the "penny for my thoughts" garbage? Could you really cook up such a boring story about other exes (yes, the *moral* seemed to be about how you are a big man now, with "perspective" now; har)? Funny how the only boring stories you tell (about this topic) have to do with someone who is legitamately boring. Maybe the *self-conscious-joke-of-a-slut circut* doesn't provide the best material for interesting stories.

For some reason, I can't help but happily chuckle along with every word you've typed here, Mr. Cardinal. But hey, that's why she's the "ex," right? I wouldn't call her "boring," necessarily, nor a "slut," but then again, that's your job. And the moral of the story, dear sir, is not that I am a "big man" with new found "perspective"--in fact, it's nothing to do with me. It's simply that with all the haphazard events that go on in a relationship, it's these events--along with the good--that we remember later. And for some reason, many of us think fondly of our time--good or bad--with these people. I'm quite certain you're not one of these people.

Oh well this is the damnedest thing. I only wanted some entertainment. You responded to *this* post? Funny.
[Now, to anyone other than Repty who might (neeephh!) read this site (no, I only read the first post, so it doesnt count <>): even though Repty is trying to pull off the "Mr. Mature who had a breakthrough with his sexologist, and likes beets and other high fiber foods, in contradistinction to Ken who eats live animals, RIGHT OFF THE GROUND" maneuver -- which is a predictable move catalogued in the "Ken Thinks There Are FBI in His Bushes So Just Make Like You're Taking the High Road" manual (it's for sale on Amazon, but not on Repty's Listamaina; which is odd since he wrote two chapters), he is really just goofing with all of you dear readers, and me.

Anyway, no, I'm not "one of those people" who think that other people serve some purpose beyond my amusement. Yet, I have thought fonldy about my time with various and sundry folks. I rarely spent my attention on their names.

I won't broach the issue of the *real* reason why certain exes are exes...(however, in my sad experience, tiger uppercuts to the sternum tend to make folks shy away!)...Am I not merciful? Am I not merciful!

Out.

Dude, I saw Charlie And The Chocolate Factory this morning and you won't believe it - Johnny Depp actually sings 'It's A Kind Of Magic' towards the end!

Actually, I'm lying (about that part - I did actually see it, though). I bet I had you going for a second, though.

Hello, repty. I remember promising many weeks ago to post something on your blog. I'm sorry it took so long and it's going to be a boring post, too. I am recuperating from ankle surgery and finally got to watch "The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" on cable last week. I guess it's a younger man kind of thing. This guy at work has been after me to watch it, too. He reminds me of you just a bit. I enjoyed parts of it, but overall I would have to, at best, give it a thumbs sideways, instead of up or down. I fell asleep about three-quarters of the way through, but woke up I think, at the end. They were going to try to re-hook up, right? I must admit to enjoying seeing Mark Ruffalo looking like a nerd. I first noticed him in 'In the Cut' and he made my heart beat a bit faster. He cracked me up in this one. I guess my problem with "ESSM" was the fact that none of the characters made me give a shit about them. I didn't care what happened to any of them. I'm probably just insensitive. And it seemed to be trying too hard to be 'different'. On that note, check out "The Girl in the Cafe" on cable this month. It's different in an effortless way. Not sure if you saw "Love Actually" but in that movie one of the characters is a has-been rock star trying to make a comeback. He's my favorite character in the whole movie. The actor who portrays him is the male lead in "The Girl in the Cafe." He really displays a wide range with those two roles. And he makes me care about both of the characters. (have I used the word character enough or should I insert a couple more?)

Welcome back to Texas, I think. Not sure if you're glad to be back or not. I think one of the deciding factors in your choice of whether to relocate to Chicago is your tolerance to cold weather. If you enjoy the weather and decide to go, good luck!

Last, but not least, do you still frequent the A vs.C environs? Have they moved to Paltalk, someplace else, or are they still lodged in Religion 1? I'm only asking out of laziness, because I haven't tried to find them since who knows when. Just curious. And would you happen to know anything more about the missing user room situation? Like if they are ever coming back, or status of things, blah blah blah?

Hope you aren't regretting asking me to post by now. hahaha

Annie,

Thanks for the post! Yeah, I dig "Love Actually," but haven't seen the other, I'm not sure if I dig Chicago yet, and I'm not really sure about AvC. I just don't have time for chat right now. I guess I cared about the characters in ESSM because I was fascinated with Jim Carry and Kate Winslet's performance.

Much of large cardinal's first comment was heinously out of order, or mean. Is it possible that he gets a do-over? Many of the other things he said were right on, but then he is making fun of a queer blog, so that didn't take much savvy.
